EXCLUSIVE: 'Talent is not an ancestral property of some Bollywood families,' Manoj Bajpayee on 'nepotism'

Manoj Bajpayee, who is counted among the ‘best actors’ working in Bollywood today, has recent won the Best Actor award for Gali Guliyan at the ongoing Indian Film Festival of Melbourne last night against the likes of Ranbir Kapoor (Sanju) and Shahid Kapoor (Padmaavat), who were also nominated for the prestigious award. Gali Guliyan, which has also been dubbed in English with the title â€" In the Shadows has been garnering a lot of attention at many such international film festivals.

In an exclusive interview with ZoomTV.com, the Gali Guliyan actor expressed his joy over winning the award. “It is overwhelming to see quality and independent cinema being loved and appreciated at an international stage. Small films which tell such intriguing stories often get overlooked and I am glad that Gali Guliyan is getting the kin d of attention that it deserves. It makes me proud that my film and my performance is being recognised at the global platform,” the actor said.

Last year, fans of the actor went on a Twitter rage to protest of Akshay Kumar’s Best Actor award win at the National Film Awards because they and a number of film crtics felt that Manoj Bajpayee, who was also nominated in that category was cheated when Akshay was given the award instead. This time however, the jury at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne seems to have reconised the Gali Guliyan actor’s phenomenal performance and rightly awarded him the best over Ranbir and Shahid.

Manoj Bajpayee has always been vocal about the topic of nepotism that has often targeted producer, director Karan Johar for launching star kids in his films instead of talented actors fr om outside of the Bollywood fraternity. Most recently, Karan was trolled for launching Janhvi Kapoor, the daughter of late actress Sridevi in Dhadak.

“Talent is not restricted to Bollywood families. A person living in a village could have the necessary talent to be on the big-screen. So, in my opinion, talent needs to be appreciated and celebrated instead of mediocrity. However, that trend is also changing slowly and steadily. More and more outsiders are getting opportunities to make a name for themselves and showcase their talent,” â€" the actor elaborated.

Gali Guliyan is set to hit theatres on September 7 and the actor urges the movie going audience to see the film in a theatre and support such kind of independent and quality cinema. Manoj Bajpayee will also be seen in the upcoming John Abraham starrer Satyameva Jay ate which is set to release with Akshay Kumar’s Gold this Independence Day (August 15).
