A Raiders rebound at Denver on Sunday? Boomer Esiason sees two problems with that scenario: coach Jon Gruden and quarterback Derek Carr.

“You’ve got a Hollywood coach that’s doing commercials and everything, and also calling out his quarterback in the media for his poor performance against the Rams,” Esiason said on the CBS pregame show Sunday morning. “A couple of those interceptions were absolutely head-scratching and you know they were driving Jon Gruden crazy.”

The Raiders jumped to a quick 7-0 lead in the first quarter of Gruden’s second tenure with the team. As late as the third quarter the game was a 13-13 tie. But the Rams scored the final 20 points. Carr threw for 303 yards, but was picked off three times â€" Esia son’s “head-scratching” comment was no exaggeration â€" and sacked once.

“They’re on the road today at Denver,” Esiason said of the Raiders. “What does that mean? (Broncos pass rusher supreme) Von Miller is coming after you. Sometimes you gotta stand in there, you gotta take the hit, you gotta be accurate. To me,” Esiason said of Carr, “he’s another (quarterback) who looks really nervous in the pocket. Hopefully he can calm down a little bit.”

That may be easier said than done. In last year’s game at Denver, Carr, in his words, “got blasted pretty good” on a play in the fourth quarter. He left the game with a transverse process fracture in his back and missed the following game.
