The Ballad of Buster Scruggs tells six short stories across one big film.

Nearly two years ago, news broke that the Coen brothers would finally make the leap down to the small screen with their next project, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. At the time, this was reportedly because Scruggsâ€"which was said to be built around six separate, possibly intertwining storiesâ€"was a large, sprawling story that might be better served as a miniseries. Turns out, it's a movie nowâ€"but Netflix is calling it "a six-part anthology film," which is more confusing than it needs to sound.

Regardless of whatever it's called, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs looks like a Coen brothers film in the mold of O Brother, Where Art Thou?â€"a dazzlingly smart comedy that isn't afraid to have fun with its Wild West setting and Looney Tunesâ€"esque antics. Seriously, there's a part where Buster Scruggs literally leaves a dust outline of himself, like he's Bugs Bunny.

The plot is kind of indecipherableâ€"and calling it a "film" further muddies the waters, so let's set the record straight: When you sit down to watch The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, either in cinemas or on Netflix on November 16, you'll be experiencing, per Variety, a 132-minute film that tells six short stories starring the likes of James Franco, Tom Waits (!), Zoe Kazan, and Liam Neesonâ€"a holdover from w hen the project was a TV series. So yeah! It's a new Coen brothers film! Coming straight to your Netflix box! Yee-haw!
