India’s growing #MeToo movement has claimed its first prominent political scalp with a government minister resigning after allegations of sexual harassment from at least 20 women.

MJ Akbar had resisted calls to quit for weeks, denouncing the claims as “wild and baseless”, and was said to have amassed a team of 97 lawyers to sue one of his accusers. Rather than stemming the tide of allegations, more women subsequently came forward.

Narendra Modi, the prime minister, who has remained silent on the scandal, appears to have cut his minister loose as the government’s claim to be a champion for women’s rights takes a battering and opposition parties have signalled they will make #MeToo allegations part of their campaign at next year’s general election.
